Rising CO2 levelsWhy are rising CO2 levels important?Rising CO2 levels are causing significant and unpredictable changes in our environment! While the predictions on the effect of rising CO2 varies from cataclysmic to the sceptical, the bulk of scientific opinion seems to say that if we can reduce CO2 levels to 1989 levels of 350 parts per million, we may be able to mitigate the risk of catastrophic climate changes. What part is Australia playing in CO2 growth?Australian produces around 19 tonnes of CO2 per person per year. The global average is 4.4 tonnes per person per year. Around 60% of our emissions come from electricity generation. Our electricity is the dirtiest in the OECD, and the 5th worst in the world. Over 900 grams of CO2 is emitted for every Kilowatt hour of electricity generated. (a kilowatt hour will light a 100 watt globe for 10 hours). The global average is around 500 grams per Kilowatt hour, and only less economically developed countries like Botswana, India and Cambodia produce dirtier electricity than Australia. Victoria produces the dirtiest power in Australia - over 1.16 kg per Kilowatt Hour. Australia is one of the richest countries and yet the dirtiest CO2 emitters! How can installing a Wind or Solar system help?Installing your own Wind or Solar electricity system is a small step you can take toward reducing Australia's CO2 output. Once installed Wind and Solar systems produce CO2 free power. A Power Predictor can help you take the guesswork out of choosing a wind or solar electricity system. Our stockists page makes it easy to find local retailers and accredited installers. |
